Opportunity on Sky News Australia

Opportunity International Australia’s Research Projects Manager, Calum Scott was interviewed on the Sky Business News program 'Social Business' last week to discuss the climate of microfinance in India with hosts Peter Shergold (from the Centre for Social Impact) and Sky's Brooke Corte.

Opportunity International is particularly concerned about this as "we are concerned about the clients affected, but secondly because we fear that this will overshadow the good work that socially focused microfinance organisations have been doing both in India and other countries."

Initially distinguishing the difference between socially focused microfinance institutions and commercial organisations, Calum states that "Commercial organisations "are now being criticised for putting profits before the needs of poor people."

Microfinance gaining media attention

On Sunday September 19, the Nine Network broadcasted “Seeds of Hope” – an hour-long documentary showcasing Hugh Jackman’s recent trip to Ethiopia. The documentary, which followed his journey to learn more about poverty and how it can be overcome through economic development, is a great initiative to help raise public awareness of microfinance. It was also profiled on Weekend Today.

The documentary has already gained media attention, shining the spotlight on microfinance as a means of sustainable development. At Opportunity International Australia, we think it’s a positive move that other non-profit agencies are joining the fight against poverty and using the same methods we have always believed in. Even more so, it is great that sustainable development solutions such as microfinance are making news (with the support of high profile spokespeople such as Hugh Jackman).

Opportunity International Australia has been helping people out of poverty through microfinance for more than 35 years.  As a leading provider and pioneer of microfinance, we are currently serving more than 2.15 million clients in Asia alone.

As awareness grows about microfinance as a sustainable tool for development, we hope that we will see more and more Australians get on board in support of our programs that have already seen millions of families get a hand up out of poverty.
